15 to 16 July 2011 saw the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival turn 21 and a massive crowd of 11 000 people joined us at the Somerset East showgrounds to celebrate.

Approximately 1.5 ton of biltong and 160 stalls made 2011 a year in Biltong Festival history to remember. Let's make the next year just as memorable from 13 to 14 July 2012.

Along with donating the profits of the Beer Tent to a variety of community projects – which benefits underprivileged individuals - the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival also brings some colour and entertainment to individuals that society exiles.

Each year, Paul Jordaan and his team take a popular entertainer and visit prisoners in the local jail. This year, Emo Adams and his band agreed to bring a little of the outside world to the men on the inside.

One of the highlights of this year’s Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival was the quality of the local talent that performed. One of the bands impressed the stage and entertainment managers so much that they were given the opportunity to perform one of their songs on the main stage before SAMA winners Professor took the stage.

Needless to say, the four-man rap group, Willie Hoories, were a big hit with the crowd and will definitely be back next year at the Festival.

By dié jaar se Biltongfees het die mense van Somerset-Oos nie net die mondigwording van die Castle Lager Oos-Kaapse Biltongfees gevier nie, maar ook ‘n unieke mylpaal van ‘n geliefde familie en besigheid van die area.

Die Somerset Budget koerantgroep is een van die hoof media borge van die Biltongfees en publiseer jaarliks ‘n Feeskoerant wat nie net die Feesprogram bevat nie, maar ook stories en inligting oor die kunstenaars, stalletjies, munisipaliteit en mense van die area.

2011 is ‘n besondere jaar vir die Van Der Walt-familie wat al vir drie generasies aan die hoof van die plattelandse koerantgroep is. Die Somerset East Budget het sy deure in 1886 oopgemaak en deur die jare van krag tot krag gegaan. Huidig verskaf die koerantgroep kontreinuus aan Cradock (Cradock Courant), Middelburg (Middelburg Courant), Somerset-Oos (Somerset Budget), Adelaide en Winterberg (Winterberg Nuus), en Fort Beaufort (Fort Beaufort Advocate).

In the early hours of Sunday morning the 21st Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival ended on a very high note - not only on the Castle Lager Gig Rig with Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels, but also in the Beer Tent with Henk Grimsell.

Last night, the Mayor of the Blue Crane Route Municipality hosted a cocktail evening for sponsors, organizers and all those involved with the Festival. It was a fun, celebratory evening with speeches, music, hanging with old and new friends, dancing and good food.

BILTONG FESTIVAL – EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY

The Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival is more than just a fun, Proudly South African Festival. It is also used as a vehicle to lend a helping hand to the underprivileged in the Blue Crane Route community. Over the past six years the profits from the Festival Beer Tent, run by the Somerset East Round Table, has been donated to a series of organisations that assist the underprivileged. To date, R150 000 has been donated.

Another way the Festival endeavours to uplift the community is to offer talented individuals from the area the opportunity to perform at the Festival. The final round of auditions saw the following individuals book their place on the Castle Lager Gig Rig:

Scrum-a-Bakkie at the Biltong Festival!

At this year’s Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival those that deem themselves brave and strong enough can participate in a unique competition held at the festival grounds.

A heavy duty bakkie will be rolling into town on the 13^th of July and first offer the people of Somerset East the opportunity to test their brawn against the bakkie. The five-person team that can scrum the bakkie the fastest over a certain distance stand a chance of winning Festival tickets or a Castle Lager hamper.

The bakkie will then power its way to the Somerset East festivalgrounds on the 15^th and compete against courageous festivalgoers. Any over 18 individual who buys two beers from the beer tent can participate in a team of five and stand a chance of winning a Weber-braai for him- or herself.

BUFFET OF SAMA WINNERS TO VISIT EASTERN CAPE

It has been confirmed! Popular kwaito musician, Professor; mellow house music group, Liquideep; and Afrikaans superstar, Kurt Darren will be visiting the Eastern Cape in July. They will be rocking the Karoo with their performances at the 21^st Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival to be held in Somerset East on the 15^th – 16^th of July 2011.

Kurt Darren, who will shortly be seen in the lead role of the upcoming Afrikaans musical comedy Ek Lief Jou, walked away with the 2011 South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Sokkie Dans Album for his album, Die Beste Medisyne.

However, it was Professor and Liquideep who proved their popularity among South African music lovers by walking away with coveted awards at the SAMA ceremony.

Professor won three awards: Best Kwaito Album for University of Kalawa Jazmee; Male Artist of the Year for University of Kalawa Jazmee; and Record of the Year for Imoto. Liquideep won two awards: Duo/Group of the Year for Fabrics of the Heart and Album of the Year for Fabrics of the Heart. They were also nominated for Best Urban Dance Album, Newcomer of the Year, and Record of the Year.

Forming part of a star-studded line up at the 21^st Biltong Festival, the above musicians will certainly assist in driving the winter blues away when they perform on the 15^th and 16^th of July, respectively, in Somerset East. The world’s only biltong-tasting, beskuit-eating mountain bike race!

This year, adventurous festivalgoers can again participate in the world’s only biltong-tasting, tequila-drinking, beskuit-eating mountain bike event.

The non-technical 40 km mountain bike ride will take place on the 16^th July at 09:00. Participants will not only experience the beauty of the countryside, but will also be treated to gastronomical pit stops en route.

Festival Officially Launched

On Monday, 23 May 2011, the 21^st Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival was officially launched. South African Breweries’ Bay and Barrel Pub was the venue for this annual event. Attendees included media from across the Eastern Cape; sponsors like Castle Lager, AlgoaFM and the Cacadu District Municipality; various councillors and members of the Blue Crane Route Municipality; as well as members from the business community.

It was a great event and set the mood for the Festival that is only 46 days away!

FLY FISHING COMPETITION

Now that the rain has filled most of Somerset East’s dams and the trout have fattened up for the winter, the Tagged Trout Competition, linked to the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival, on Sunday 16^th of July should be the best yet. Four trout are tagged and released into Mill Dam at Glen Avon Farm in Somerset East.

Come and catch one of these tagged trout and you could win yourself one of four fantastic weekend getaways valued from R1500 to R8000 each.

Visit the Walter Battiss Art Museum for a dose of culture; art works created by one of South Africa’s most original and controversial artists. Go to the Old Pastorie Museum and gril to see the beam from which the Slachter’s Nek rebels were hung – one by one!

Biltong - a cured meat delicacy made proudly in South Africa. Different meat products are used for biltong: anything from beef to game and even chicken. A little fun fact on the word 'biltong': The Dutch word Bil means rump and tong means strip or tongue; then biltong would mean rump-strip or strip of rump.

Biltong has grown vastly popular around the world in places such as the United Kingdom and New Zealand. There are many different variations of cured and dried meats that bare similarity to biltong, including: Cabanossi, Jerky (a common American meat treat), and the other South African favourite, droewors. It would be of interest to try them all, but none can surpass the pride and love of biltong within South Africa.

Prior to the drying process, biltong goes through a few steps before it becomes the spiced delicacy we all know it to be. First the meat is marinated in a vinegary solution before being rubbed down with preferred spices (most commonly coriander, amongst others). Next, the meat is refrigerated to allow for drainage of excess fluid before being hung out to dry...literally (usually in a built dryer, electric oven, or cool, ventilated storage room).

After this meticulous process, the meat is ready to be sliced and enjoyed to your preference.

During the sultry month of March, the annual Caltex Bruintjieshoogte Cycle Fest takes mountain bike enthusiasts on an adventurous - some might say very challenging - 85-, 60- or 25 km race (or ‘trek’ depending on your fitness level) through a variety of Somerset East’s countryside.

Gregory Da Silva – The Eggman

It is with great sadness that we were informed that South Africa’s beloved Eggman, Gregory Da Silva, was attacked and robbed in Milan, Italy, in March.

He is on the mend in Germany, and we wish him a speedy recovery and a safe return to his friends, family and fans.

Why I love Somerset East

There is a lot to love about Somerset East – our lovely Boschberg Mountain draped in mist, or green and vibrant in the sun; Paulet Street with its history and Heritage roses; the long serene oak or jacaranda lined streets.

I love the vibe in Nojoli Street on Saturdays, the music, the crowds of smiling, friendly people, great restaurants and coffee shops, and when you go into a shop, everybody knows you.

I love Somerset East when it rains, when it is sunny, but best of all on clear, crisp winter days.

I love the idea that maybe the old explorers were right, and there really are unicorns on the Boschberg!

Shopping, sampling ...STALLS!

With winter softly knocking at the door, biltong season seems right around the corner.

The organizers are feverishly coordinating behind the scenes and they are moments away from announcing this year’s musical line up.

They are also accepting stall bookings, and from this year’s entries we can confidently say that there will something for everyone in the dusty lanes criss-crossing the showgrounds.

Of course there will be biltong stalls galore, but you’ll also be able to:

Take a gastronomical tour from general fair food (chip sticks, pizza, and burgers) to traditional Afrikaans – basaar food like koeksusters, vetkoek, sosaties and pannekoek. For the adventurous there will be Kudu burgers and various other wild game to taste, while the traditionalists can sample roosterkoek, afval, potjiekos, kerrie, and fish and chips.
For the true shopping enthusiasts there will be a variety of fashion accessories, clothing, children’s toys, jewellery and art to choose from.
And...

Well you’ll have to come and see for yourself what else you’ll be able to taste, hear, see and experience at this year’s Festival.

The smiling, colourful Eggman will be back at the Biltong Festival this year.

However, in the meantime he will be waving the South African flag in Italy, where he is participating in various activities for the Guinness Book of Records.

His African inspired headdress normally weighs up to 25 kilograms, but for the Guinness Book of Records, Gregory da Silva has gone all out. With the title of ‘Biggest Eggs Hat in the World’, he will be striding across the Piazza Navona with 10 000 eggs on his head.

What a Festival! Yes, the 2010 Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival has come and gone, but the fun that was had will be talked about for months to come. There was rocking entertainment, great food, excellent biltong and ample time to hang with friends and new acquaintances.

Before the Festival kicked-off, however, the Blue Crane Route Municipality welcomed dignitaries, entertainers and stall owners by hosting a Cocktail Evening for them. This event also honoured Mr Paul Jordaan, who was awarded with a certificate for service. Mr Jordaan has been involved with the Biltong Festival for its entire existence!

With snow on the majestic Boschberg Mountains, everyone was preparing for a chilly festival. But, the weather surprised us all, and the Festival was blessed with sunny days and somewhat mild evenings.

The time has come for the 20th Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival.

Tantalizing smells, eye-catching colour and a real Festival spirit has invaded the Somerset East Showgrounds. From early morning, stall owners and festival-goers alike have been arriving en mass to start their takeover of this quaint little town at the foot of the Boschberg Mountain.

This year, the array of stalls and entertainers will definitely allow you to ‘come hang’ with friends and family into the wee hours of the night.

Already on the first day of the Festival, festival-goers were not only treated to first-class entertainment, but they could also browse over 300 stalls and mingle with locals who are more than willing to show them around the grounds.

Somerset East’s singing sensation

Trevisha Miggels is a bundle of joyous energy. This 18-year- old has been
singing since she was eight, and it has always been “her passion”.

“I listen to all types of music, but I especially enjoy Bach and Celine Dion,” says Trevisha,
who will matriculate from Gill College in Somerset East at the end of 2010.

At this year’s Biltong Festival, Trevisha is looking forward to seeing Emo Adams.
But she herself will be entertaining the crowd as she forms part of the Local Talent
slot that starts at 13:00 on the 16th July.

Education in Somerset East

The town of Somerset East is proud and supportive of their educational institutions. On this blog we will feature two of the town’s schools.

Gill College

Founded in 1869, the picturesque Gill College welcomes visitors entering the town of Somerset East. The school was initially a university, and then became a boy’s school. A merging with Bellevue Girls School saw Gill College eventually begin its path to the school it is today: modern, cultured and dual medium.

This historic school’s ideal for all their learners is presented in their Coat of Arms. The life lesson the school wishes all their students to take away with them when they leave is to: “Never give up trying. Never lose faith in yourself. At the same time keep your faith in your fellowmen by being trusting and tolerant. For, by keeping faith in yourself and others, you will have provided yourself with a sheet-anchor which will prove your refuge and salvation in the stress of life.”

William Oates Memorial School

Located in the historic Paulet Street in Somerset East, the William Oates Memorial School has a breathtaking view of the Boschberg Mountain as well as the town. Named after a Wesleyan Minister, this School educates children from some of the poorest families in the area.

Mr Isak du Plessis is currently the school’s principle and he ensures that these children receive physical and mental sustenance. Born and bred in Somerset East, Mr Du Plessis has spend 27 years in the education sector.

An oasis in the heart of the Karoo Midlands

It is all about the journey when you point your vehicle in the direction of Somerset East.

Take it slow. Stop…and allow the silence to envelope you. Capture the majestic mountains and never ending blue sky on film. Taste the homemade jams and biltong on sale at a quaint farm stall. Admire the shades of green and brown rolling past your window as you drive past sprawling farmsteads and vast sheep and cattle farms. Feel your heart beating in unison with the wild pulse of the Karoo and its even wilder inhabitants. And when you finally enter the picturesque town of Somerset East, allow the tranquillity that radiates from the people, and the area, to set the pace.

Based at the foot of the mysterious Boschberg Mountain, the town is a green oasis in the sometimes harsh “place of thirst” – the Karoo. Along with Cookhouse and Pearston, Somerset East falls within the Blue Crane Route Municipal area.

Established in 1825 by Lord Charles Somerset, it was not only the British who found the town captivating but also the Xhosas, Khoisan, Dutch pioneers and Settlers. Today, the town has various stately heritage sites that whisper the rich history of the area.

Glimpses of the town

Somerset East Museum

Originally erected as a chapel, this lovely building was converted into a Parsonage in 1835 and declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1972. The Georgian building forms part of the Boschberg Nature Reserve and hosts the permanent exhibition on the 1815 Slagter’s Nek Rebellion.

This beautiful building looks out over the town and is a tranquil picnic place in the summer. Venture inside and find out more about the town’s coloured history, including the story of the Flora Dolls and that of interesting people like John Kepe, better known as ‘Samson of the Mountain’, and Mrs. Dora Jacobs who died at the age of 123. Venture around the back of the Museum and you can have a look inside the Xhosa Exhibition.

The town also boasts several Provincial Heritage sites, most of which can be found in Paulet Street just below the Museum.

Walter Battiss Art Gallery

Originally an Officers Mess for British troops stationed on the eastern frontier, 45 Paulet Street has had an interesting history. From private home to hotel, it now houses a permanent exhibition of work by renowned artist, Walter Battiss.

Walter Battiss was also a friend of Pablo Picasso.

Churches

Beautifully constructed churches add to the architectural treasure trove found in Somerset East.

The Angler and Antelope

This four star luxury guesthouse is a beautiful amalgamation of different eras. Amenities of the 21st Century are infused with a friendly, tourist-orientated ambience of yesteryear. A good example of this is the St Francis Culinary Centre, which is an old church, built in 1906. It has character and many a visitor to the guesthouse spends their time in the Centre enjoying traditional fare and chatting to knowledgeable hosts, Annabelle and Allan Hobson.

Somerset Hotel

Every little town has one - a hotel whose walls whisper stories of the past. This is then also true of the Somerset Hotel, who one night hosted a farmer and…his horse in Room 12 and 13.

The Hotel is also the location for Crazi Dazi, a shop that sells clothing for the uniquely different. For the Biltong Festival its owner, Ilze Dalton, game up with a ‘crazi bag’ that one can use during the Festival.

Surrounded by nature

Typical Karoo veld, indigenous forests, grassveld to rolling savannah plains, the Blue Crane Route is one of the only areas in South Africa that can boast with four biomes in one district.

Somerset East is indeed a little gem in the heart of the Karoo where tourists will not only be able to stroll down charming streets, meet friendly locals, sample some traditional South African fare, but also embrace their ‘wild’ side, by participating in various adrenaline-inspired activities like abseiling, mountain biking, hiking, hunting, gorge glides, 4X4 trails, river tubing and rock climbing. For those who enjoy more relaxed activities Somerset East offers birding, game viewing, camping, fishing, fly fishing and horse riding. Being a town that is so close to nature, it is no surprise that Somerset East annually hosts’ the Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival.

Meet some of the people of Somerset East and surroundings: PART 1

A life made of beads

The winding road navigates you through a mosaic of fields. Lush lucerne, never-ending mielies and cattle, goats and sheep grazing on various other agricultural fields contrasts vividly with the bright blue sky above. The tangible silence, that one can really only experience on a farm, enfolds you as you drive towards Kokskraal Handcrafts.

Liza Troskie, owner of Kokskraal Handcrafts

Located on the farm, Kokskraal, this impressively creative business is run by Liza Troskie. It started as a hobby in 2001, but soon grew into a job-creation project for the fifth generation farm workers that reside on the farm. Mrs. Troskie wanted to give back to the people that supports and assists them on a daily basis. With the willingness of the Xhosa-women on the farm to generate an extra income for their families, and an idea to “create a job for each woman on the farm”; Mrs Troskie and her fellow creative enthusiasts, embarked on path lined with…beads.

Beading at Kokskraal Handcrafts

Using their beading talents the women of Kokskraal started with small items like keyrings and beaded handbag jewellery. The business grew steadily, as did the amount of farm workers that wanted to be part of the project. In 2004, Mrs Troskie ventured into marketing her business. Here the assistance of SEDA was invaluable. They assisted her in creating marketing material, and a website from which she could sell the beaded curios and gifts.

The success of Kokskraal Handcrafts was not only being recognized by the local municipality and community, but also by Citigroup and the United Nations. Through SEDA, Kokskraal Handcrafts was entered into the Women Empowerment Category of the Global Micro Entrepreneur Award. Totally out of the blue, Mrs Troskie and her husband, Bertus, were flown to New York where she found out that she won the Global Micro Entrepreneur Award 2005 (awarded by Citigroup and the United Nations). She was also given the opportunity to speak to the UN about investing in Africa and as an added bonus…met Sir Richard Branson at the award ceremony.

As of 2010, Kokskraal Handcrafts have diversified their offerings to include beaded toesandals, glass identifiers, beaded flags, serviette binders, beaded tiebacks, candle holders, various porcupine jewellery and beaded decorations to mention but a few. They also supply beaded gifts and curios to over 200 shops in South Africa and export their goods to over 20 countries.

Nonsimphiwe

The employees of Kokskraal Handcrafts were further given shares in the company and essentially they are now working for themselves. This, Mrs Troskie comments, has not only assisted in skills development and in improving the human dignity of the people, but also offers them a chance to create something beautiful that they can be proud of.

Currently, the business has 10 employees (two of which are male). We spoke to 22-year old Nonsimphiwe who through her involvement in the business not only furthered her education (by completing various ABET courses, but also by becoming an ABET instructor on the farm,) but was also chosen by the Cacadu District Municipality to go to the 2009 Tourism Indaba.

“I learned a lot about small businesses and how to go out and look for clients for our business,” says Nonsimphiwe.

Having lived in the area all her life, Nonsimphiwe learned her craft from her mother. Her favourite product to make is beaded candleholders.

So if you decide to ‘come hang with friends’ at the 20^th Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival, then do take a drive out to Kokskraal and meet Liza Troskie, Nonsimphiwe and the other creative forces behind Kokskraal Handcrafts. The 20th Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival was officially launched to the media on the 26th of May 2010. Held at Castle Lager’s Headquarters in Perseverance, Port Elizabeth, the media launch attracted a variety of media as well as guests from the Blue Crane Route Municipality, Cacadu District Municipality and Castle Lager.

Just 180 km from Nelson Mandela Bay, the picturesque town of Somerset East is now preparing itself for the event of the year ‐ the annual Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival. At the Launch, Castle Lager and the Blue Crane Route Municipality representatives, invited young and old to come ‘hang’ with friends and new acquaintances at this year’s Festival. Celebrating its twentieth (20th) year, the 2010 Biltong Festival hopes to harness the excitement and camaraderie of the Soccer World Cup. On this year’s menu, one will find over 300 stalls ‐ ranging from food, curios, outdoor, and product –; entertainment specifically for children, including face painting, Popsie the Clown; and for the more adventurous: paintball, quad biking and fly‐fishing demonstrations. Off‐course there will also be buckets of biltong, like kudu, beef, giraffe, buffalo and chicken, available.

But, the main course of the 2010 Biltong Festival, along with the samplings of biltong and Castle, is the entertainment line‐up for this year’s Festival. Festival enthusiasts can look forward to hearing some of South Africa’s most popular performers such as: SAMA winners Big NUZ, Dozi and Nianell, Gerhard Steyn, Emo Adams and his band, Heinz Winckler, Nadine, Broers and Prime Circle, to name but a few.

SAMA WINNERS, BIG NUZ, TO VISIT EASTERN CAPE

Big NUZ will be entertaining crowds at the 20th Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival on the 16th – 17th July 2010

It has been confirmed! Popular kwaito group, Big NUZ, will be visiting the Eastern Cape in July. The group, who hails from Durban, will perform at the 20th Castle Lager East Cape Biltong Festival to be held in Somerset East on the 16th – 17th of July 2010.

The trio appeared on the South African music scene in 2006, and has steadily transformed the face of kwaito music in the country, already winning Best Kwaito Song for “Ubala Lolo” at the 2008 Metro FM Awards.

This year, they were nominated for four MTN South African Music Awards. On the night, they walked away with awards for Best Kwaito Album and Album of the Year for their album “Undisputed”. They also won the coveted MTN Record of the Year that is chosen by the people of South Africa. President Jacob Zuma also met with the group and congratulated them on their win, confirming that they are one of the country’s most popular kwaito groups.

Their newest musical offering, and third album, “3rd Round” reached platinum status at the end of December 2009 and has been enjoying airtime on major radio stations around the country.
